Jean-François Millet (1814-1875) was a French painter who is famed for his depictions of peasant life. He was a leading figure in the Barbizon School, a school of painting that was very influential in bringing Realism to landscape painting in France. The school was named after the village of Barbizon, where Millet arrived in 1849… 2021-04-11 Renowned for his Realist subject matter, Jean-Francois Millet was moved by social injustice to paint peasants and agricultural laborers, capturing both the poverty and dignity of rural French life. “The human side of art is what touches me most,” he once said. Though the artist was considered a socialist revolutionary by much of the establishment, Millet’s painting The Winnower (1848 Jean-François Millet was a celebrated French painter and member of what became known as the Barbizon School.
